Colin Farrell accidentally let an expletive slip during a live segment on the Today show while promoting his new film A Big Bold Beautiful Journey alongside co-star Margot Robbie.
The 49-year-old actor was on the program Tuesday morning with Robbie and host Craig Melvin when he sampled an on-set snack the pair said they regularly ate while filming — a chip sandwich made with Tayto cheese-and-onion crisps, white bread and thick butter. After taking a bite and confirming the chip brand, Farrell exclaimed, "I f**king knew it," prompting audible surprise in the studio and a startled look from Robbie.
Melvin reacted on air, saying, "Oh my God!" as Farrell attempted to recover, saying with his mouth still full, "They misheard me!" The exchange was clipped and shared on social media, where viewers of the program posted reactions to the moment on the show's Instagram page.
Several commenters described the moment as funny and human, while others noted Farrell's surprised facial expression. One viewer wrote that the segment was "a big bold beautiful journey alright," referencing the film's title in a lighthearted response.
Farrell and Robbie were appearing as part of a wider press tour for A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, which is set to open in theaters on Sept. 19. The pair walked the red carpet at the film's New York City premiere on Monday evening. The Kogonada-directed picture marked Robbie's first film release since 2023's Barbie, which she starred in and produced through her LuckyChap company.
Robbie shot the film while pregnant; she and husband Tom Ackerley welcomed their first child late last year, representatives have said. During the interview, Farrell also joked about Robbie's appetite during production, saying she had a "pregnant appetite" while filming.
Morning shows have increasingly woven informal moments and on-set anecdotes into promotional segments. Studio gaffes and unscripted remarks often generate social-media attention that can amplify publicity in the days before a film's release.
Producers and networks typically handle inadvertent profanity on live television according to their broadcast standards and the regulator rules that apply in each market. The Today show did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the on-air moment.
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey stars Farrell and Robbie and will be in theaters beginning Sept. 19. The interview on Today was part of scheduled promotional appearances by the cast in the run-up to the release.
