Cole Hauser, who stars as Rip Wheeler in the "Yellowstone" spin-off "Dutton Ranch," has spoken about the creative hurdles faced during the show's first season due to the absence of creator Taylor Sheridan from the writers' room. Hauser acknowledged that the situation presented "challenges" as the cast worked with new writers and directors, stating, "Everything had changed."
"Dutton Ranch" marked the first series within the "Yellowstone" universe to not be written by Sheridan, who remained as an executive producer. Day-to-day creative responsibilities were handled by showrunner Chad Feehan and a new writing team. Hauser described the transition as difficult, admitting, "I enjoy a challenge, it certainly was a challenge. We worked our a--es off this year."
Despite the changes, Hauser expressed pride in what the cast and crew accomplished. He emphasized the cast's focus on performing and telling the story with the available creative team. "It was about putting my head down and working my a-- off with… what I had around me. The writers that we had, the new writers that we had, that we had to figure out on our feet how to really perform and tell a story. So, I'm proud of what we accomplished, and I look forward to doing it again," Hauser told Film Inside NYC.
These comments follow speculation about the show's creative direction. Co-star Ed Harris previously shared his dissatisfaction with his character's storyline in the first season, telling Variety that he felt "a little bit misled" and was ready to leave the show midway through filming. Harris stated he signed on believing his character, Everett McKinney, would be a central figure, but felt that promise was not fulfilled. He also expressed disappointment that a scene in which his character sang was cut. Harris has been assured that his role will expand in the second season, with production set to resume in February.
