Veteran Channel Nine presenter Clint Stanaway announced Tuesday that he will leave the network after 25 years to concentrate on his radio career, saying the combination of television and his role on a Melbourne breakfast show had become unsustainable.

"It's been a huge workload juggling both TV and being part of the Melbourne Nova breakfast team over the past couple of years," Stanaway said in a statement, adding that he was passionate about his "newfound love for radio" and wanted to prioritise it while seeking a better work-life balance.

Stanaway, 42, began his media career in the news library at Melbourne's GTV9 in the early 2000s and moved into reporting roles at WIN Television in Bendigo. He later returned to 9News Melbourne, working as a news and court reporter before being appointed Weekend Sport Presenter for 9News Melbourne. Over his sports journalism career he covered major events including the Olympic Games and the Melbourne Cup.

He has served in various on-air roles at Nine, including as co-host of Weekend Today and as part of the Wide World of Sports team. In March 2024, Stanaway was announced as the newsreader for Nova 100's breakfast team, which features Jase Hawkins and Lauren Phillips. He said he will continue with that Nova role as he steps away from his television duties.

Stanaway thanked colleagues at Nine for their support and left open the possibility of a return. "I've always treasured my job, be it on 9News, as co-host of Weekend Today or as part of the Wide World of Sports team," he said. "I've met so many wonderful people, shared some incredible stories and experienced the most unforgettable moments. The thrill of live television is so addictive, it'll never leave me. While I step away with a heavy heart, I suspect it won't be forever. The Nine family has been so good to me, and for that I'll be forever thankful."

To mark his move to radio last year, Stanaway and the Nova breakfast team released a short promotional video in which Married at First Sight relationship expert John Aitken playfully encouraged the show to "spice things up" with a surprise third participant — a moment in which Stanaway featured as a cheeky addition to the on-air troupe.

Nine did not immediately announce a replacement for Stanaway on Weekend Today. The network and representatives for Stanaway were not available for further comment at the time of publication.
