Director Chuck Russell, celebrated for his work on the 1994 blockbuster "The Mask" and the 1987 horror sequel "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors," has died. He was 74.
According to reports, Russell died unexpectedly at his home in the San Diego area on Wednesday. The local fire department was called to his residence following a report of a medical emergency involving an unconscious male. His cause of death is currently unknown.
Russell's career included a string of box office successes in the 1980s and 1990s. He directed the 1988 remake of "The Blob" and the Jim Carrey-starring comedy "The Mask," which significantly boosted Carrey's career. He also helmed "Eraser" (1996) with Arnold Schwarzenegger and "The Scorpion King" (2002) starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
His directorial debut was "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors," which is credited with launching the career of Patricia Arquette. The film was a critical and commercial success, establishing Russell in the horror genre.
After a hiatus from directing following "The Scorpion King," Russell returned with "I Am Wrath" in 2016, starring John Travolta. However, the film received poor reviews and performed badly at the box office.
He later directed the 2019 Bollywood film "Junglee" and the 2022 action thriller "Paradise City," which also featured Bruce Willis in one of his final film roles. "Paradise City" was also met with critical and commercial disappointment.
Russell's final directorial effort was the 2024 supernatural thriller "Witchboard," a remake of the 1986 film of the same name, which he also co-wrote. While the film did not achieve major box office success, it garnered some positive critical attention for its throwback style.
In a previous interview promoting "Witchboard," Russell spoke about his return to the horror genre, stating his intention to re-enter it only when he felt he could offer something new. "I never meant to be away from horror this long. I always intended to go back," he told Rue Morgue. "I had different ideas in my notebook, but I didn’t want to get pegged as a horror director after A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and The Blob."
Russell is survived by his wife of 19 years, Ania, and their three children: Logan, Riley, and Carlyn.
