Director Christopher Nolan's latest project, "The Odyssey," is garnering praise, with actor Tom Holland describing his role as a "last chance to play a boy." The film, shot entirely on IMAX film, is noted for its visual grandeur and Nolan's dedication to practical filmmaking.
Nolan is known for his commitment to using real elements in his productions, including "real ships, real seas, a real Trojan horse on a real beach" for "The Odyssey." This approach extends to his belief in the power of celluloid film, stating, "if you want naturalism, if you want to show somebody the way the world looks, celluloid film is the way to do it."
The film has already generated discussion, including online commentary from Elon Musk regarding casting decisions, specifically the choice of Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy. Musk shared a post that accused Nolan of making casting choices for diversity-related reasons, a claim that was met with counter-accusations of racism. Defenders of the casting pointed out that Helen is a mythological figure with divine parentage.
Nolan, however, views the story of "The Odyssey" as inherently crowd-pleasing. He stated, "When you go to Homer, it's a very crowd-pleasing story. It's popcorn stuff. I mean that's the joy of it and that's why it's endured for this long." He aims to "bring something fresh to the audience," arguing that a common Hollywood mistake is "to forget how much people want something new, how much they want something they haven't seen before."
Tom Holland, appearing in his first Christopher Nolan film, stars alongside Matt Damon, who portrays Odysseus. The cast also includes Jimmy Gonzales as Cepheus and Himesh Patel as Eurylochus. Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, Odysseus's wife.
