Christopher Nolan's 13th feature film, "The Odyssey," received a wave of critical acclaim following its global premiere in London on Monday. Critics took to social media to praise the epic, calling it "breathtaking, bold and flawless filmmaking" and a "cinematic achievement."
The film, which premiered at Leicester Square, marks a return to London for Nolan, who described the location as a "full circle moment" after growing up watching films there.
Early reactions highlighted the performances of the ensemble cast, particularly Matt Damon and Samantha Morton. Collider's Steven Weintraub described the film as "INCREDIBLE" and "flawless," urging audiences to see it in IMAX 70mm for a "jaw dropping experience."
The Hollywood Reporter's Aaron Couch noted Nolan's foray into horror, stating it was the first time the director had "a fleshed out horror sequence." Los Angeles Times film editor Joshua Rothkopf called "The Odyssey" "staggering," praising its blend of "humor and grandeur" and deeming it "pure cinema."
Rothkopf specifically lauded Samantha Morton's portrayal of the goddess Circe, calling her scenes "incredible, witchy and wonderful." Time Out critic Phil de Semlyen echoed this sentiment, describing Morton's performance as "extraordinary" and the film as a "dizzying mix of craft and spectacle."
Indiewire's Anne Thompson suggested that Matt Damon could be a contender for an Oscar, predicting that the film would be a major player in the upcoming awards season. Rotten Tomatoes critic Erik Davis called the film "an absolute triumph" and a "crowning cinematic achievement."
Robert Pattinson also received specific praise from Davis, who called his performance "conniving, manipulative and endlessly entertaining," describing it as one of his favorite roles.
Despite the overwhelmingly positive reception, Indiewire critic David Ehrlich offered a more measured view, acknowledging the film's "immense" scale but deeming it "too clunky to be S-tier Nolan," though he noted that "the last act rewards the journey."
"The Odyssey" is scheduled to be released in cinemas on July 17.
