A Christmas shoebox appeal has been launched to provide gifts for children in Staffordshire who might otherwise go without. The charity, which has supported over 100,000 children globally in the past two decades, is focusing its efforts locally this year, aiming to help one in seven children in the area who are unlikely to receive a formal Christmas present.

According to the appeal organizers, an estimated one in five parents and carers have considered canceling Christmas due to financial difficulties, and one in nine stated they would be unable to afford a present for their child. The shoeboxes will be filled with gifts and practical items, with participating supermarkets providing collection points for empty boxes. Shoppers can fill them while doing their grocery shopping and return them to be distributed discreetly through schools and local charities.

"The schools know the families and they're the best place to hand those gifts over at the right time in a discreet and respectful way," said one organizer, referring to the distribution strategy. Students involved in supporting the campaign highlighted the potential impact of receiving a gift-filled shoebox, noting that it can make children feel special and loved.

Some students suggested including practical items such as notepads, pens, calculators, and stationery sets alongside toys. The initiative aims to ensure that children can experience the joy and merriment of the festive season, fostering a sense of giving and love.
