Chrissy Metz, star of the television series "This Is Us," has publicly addressed criticism regarding her weight loss, emphasizing that online commentary is often relentless. She revealed that her decision to pursue weight management, including the use of GLP-1 medication, was significantly influenced by her father's death from obesity complications.
Metz described her past skepticism towards GLP-1 medications but explained that her father's passing changed her perspective. She noted that the medication has helped her manage what she calls "food noise" – the persistent thoughts about food. "I know it sounds so silly now, but I'm like, ‘Oh, not everybody hears that all the time? Oh, okay. Oh, there's like something chemically off and metabolically off and hereditary, you know, issues,'" Metz stated in a podcast interview. "And so really when that happened with my family and my father, I was like, I have to do something about it. And so, yeah...I feel better on the medication."
Metz is currently performing in the Broadway musical "& Juliet." She shared an anecdote about a relative who commented on her weight loss by saying it was time she "took control of your weight," as "weight has always been an issue in our family." Metz pointed out that this relative is also overweight, which she noted makes such comments less impactful, though other criticisms can still be "wild."
She also commented on the nature of online criticism, observing that people rarely make such remarks in person. "It's interesting what people say cause would they ever say it to you on the streets? Never. Never," she said. Metz also highlighted the contradictory nature of the comments she receives, oscillating between criticism for not losing weight and criticism for losing it. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter what you do," she stated.
Metz is now partnering with Ro, a telehealth company that offers weight loss medications among other health services.
