Alexandra Artrip, one of the child actresses from the 1998 film Practical Magic, has spoken out about not being asked to reprise her role in the recently released sequel. Artrip, who played Antonia Owens, learned about the recasting through news articles.
In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, Artrip stated that she had retired from acting shortly after the original film and pursued a career in corporate life. She was married and had children, living a quiet life away from Hollywood. She noted that she didn't expect to be contacted by the original cast or crew, as she had left the industry.
Artrip made a public attempt in 2025 via Facebook to be involved in the sequel in some capacity, writing, "I would be absolutely honored to return for a cameo or to attend the premiere for #PracticalMagic2." However, this did not lead to any involvement. She told the Daily Mail, "I don't think anyone even knew I was alive a month ago." Her only recent interaction with the original cast was a social media comment from Sandra Bullock earlier in the summer.
Evan Rachel Wood, who played Kylie Owens, also expressed her disappointment. She wrote on her Instagram Stories in July 2025, "It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters." Artrip stated she understood Wood's frustration, acknowledging that Wood is still active in the industry, whereas her own life path is different.
Artrip acknowledged that recasting might make sense due to the age of the characters in the sequel. She expressed well wishes for Maisie Williams, who took over her role, and hoped her previous portrayal might have served as inspiration. Artrip plans to see the new film, citing fond memories of her time on the original set and her connection to the beloved franchise.
