Charli XCX has spoken about the understanding she shares with her husband, George Daniel, noting that he was the first person to truly grasp her complexities, including what she describes as her "extremely narcissistic" tendencies.
In a recent interview on Zane Lowe's Apple Music podcast, the 33-year-old singer discussed her latest album, "Music, Fashion, Film." She elaborated on the track "I'm Afraid," revealing it delves into her relationship with Daniel, the drummer for The 1975, and her past difficulties with commitment.
"Meeting George, he was sort of the first person who really understood me so intricately, like my pros and my cons," Charli XCX explained. "And also the fact that on top of all of that, I'm also an artist who sometimes is extremely narcissistic. You know what I mean? Like he knows that."
She reflected on how the demands of being an artist can foster selfishness, noting the freedom to prioritize her own needs and creative direction. "Sometimes being an artist you do get to be selfish, it's kind of part of the job," she said. "You get to be like 'I'm not doing that, I'm doing this, I'm doing it my way, I'm canceling this, I'm going to be late.' It's like you get to just be selfish."
However, Charli XCX acknowledged the necessity of balancing this with the demands of a relationship. "When you put that into a relationship, you don't really get to be selfish all the time. Or you can, but it shouldn't be like that," she stated, emphasizing the need to separate the artist persona from her role as a partner. "And you kind of have to separate those two parts of your brain, like, oh, this isn't the artist brain this is the being a good person, like loving the person unconditionally."
She added that Daniel, also an artist, shares this understanding, making their relationship work. "George actually, God bless him, is somebody who understands that and understands where it comes from as well," she said. The couple, who announced their engagement in November 2023, married in an intimate ceremony in July 2025, followed by a larger celebration in Sicily in September.
Charli XCX credited Daniel with bolstering her self-confidence. "I wouldn't be where I am today without him. He just gave me so much confidence in myself because he was able to sort of balance me as a human in our private life," she said. "And he made me really happy and you know and still does." She also noted that he has helped her explore different aspects of herself in a way that feels both "chaotic" and "safe."
In a previous interview with British Vogue in April, Charli XCX mentioned her perspective on writing about her marriage. "I don’t really want to write songs about my husband forever. I’m not sure how interesting that is, and he knows that," she stated. "If I write about our relationship, I’m probably only really interested in writing about some of the more obscure feelings of being married."
