Channel Seven has made sport editor Matt Carmichael redundant after a 23-year career at the network, the broadcaster and reports said.

Carmichael, 44, was told on Monday that his role will end next month, with his final duties to conclude after the Bathurst 1000. In an email to staff, Seven news and current affairs director Ray Kuka said, "Matt will now be taking a well-deserved extended break. Matt leaves as a script craftsman. Matt has worked at Seven for two decades but, sadly, that will come to an end next month, fittingly after the Bathurst 1000."

Carmichael has been a visible presence across the network’s sports coverage, contributing to Sunrise and the network’s morning, afternoon and 6pm news bulletins. He has reported on multiple major international events for Seven, including the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and the Commonwealth Games, and interviewed high-profile athletes such as Kobe Bryant at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. His work also extended to coverage of the Australian Open, AFL, rugby union, boxing, cricket and motorsport.

A LinkedIn entry for Carmichael continued to list his occupation as sport editor at Seven but also indicated he was "open to work" and available to start immediately. The Daily Mail reported the redundancy and said it had contacted Channel Seven for comment.

The announcement comes shortly after the network revealed the retirement of veteran meteorologist Peter Murphy, who is stepping down after a 41-year career at Seven. Channel Seven did not publicly elaborate on the reasons for Carmichael’s redundancy in the staff email quoted by the reports.

Carmichael joined Seven more than two decades ago and rose to a senior role in the network’s sports department. Colleagues and viewers have credited him with versatility across many sporting codes and for on-air and production roles behind flagship programs. The network’s statement framed the change as the end of a long tenure and noted the timing around the Bathurst 1000 as a natural point for his departure.

There was no immediate public confirmation of Carmichael’s next steps. His departure will leave a vacancy in Seven’s sports team ahead of the Australian motorsport calendar and the southern hemisphere summer sports season, periods during which the network traditionally delivers major sports coverage.

Requests for further comment from Channel Seven had not been answered publicly at the time of publication.
