Actor Celyn Jones described reaching "peak Welshness" during the filming of his upcoming movie, "On the Sea," which was shot in a remote fishing community on Anglesey, North Wales.
The film centers on Jack, portrayed by Barry Ward, a middle-aged man whose traditional life revolves around fishing and his church. His world is disrupted by the arrival of Daniel, played by Lorne MacFadyen, a character described as carefree.
Daniel's presence prompts Jack to question his sexuality as he grapples with emerging feelings. MacFadyen explained that while the story addresses a common human experience, it is seldom depicted on screen. He highlighted Jack's journey as a fascinating character study, noting the contrast with his own character, Daniel, who is comfortable with his sexuality. MacFadyen anticipates audiences will be surprised by the novelty of the characters and their rapidly developing relationship.
Jones plays Dyfan, Jack's brother, with whom he operates a mussel farming business. During his preparation for the role, Jones learned the technique of hand-raking mussels, although he admitted the harvested shellfish were ultimately unusable by the end of the day. He humorously remarked that his immersion in Welsh culture during the filming was so complete that "I just needed Charlotte Church to call the bingo and I've gone full score Welsh."
