Celine Dion has made her first public appearance in two years, delighting fans as she waved from her hotel in Paris. The superstar, 58, was seen leaving the Royal Monceau Hotel on Monday, two days after her first public outing since announcing her stage comeback.
Dion appeared in great spirits, sporting a stylish brown crocodile leather jacket, black culottes, heeled boots, and sunglasses. She is preparing for a return to the stage following a three-year hiatus after cancelling her world tour due to a battle with stiff person syndrome (SPS), a rare neurological disorder characterized by severe muscle stiffness and painful spasms.
Dion's struggles with SPS were detailed in her 2024 documentary, "I Am: Celine Dion." In the past six years, she has performed publicly only once before her recent appearances. Her last significant public event was at an Elie Saab fashion event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2024, though she has been spotted attending other concerts since then.
Road to Recovery and Comeback Shows
In March, Dion announced a ten-date residency in Paris, scheduled to begin this autumn at the Paris La Défense Arena. Due to high demand, the run has been extended to include an additional 16 performances, running from September through May 2027.
Preparing for her return, Dion has been engaged in a rigorous exercise regimen. This includes 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week and twice-weekly ballet classes. "It is a progressive condition. I don’t like to say 'disease,'" Dion explained in a recent interview, emphasizing her focus on managing her health.
Dion was diagnosed with SPS in 2022 after experiencing a flare-up in 2020. For three years, she maintained a low public profile, partly due to concerns that fans might perceive her as living a full life while still canceling shows. During this period, she developed a deep appreciation for nature, seeing metaphors for her own struggles in the changing seasons.
Speaking about her return, Dion expressed a strong desire to give back to her fans. "It’s been so long, I would like to offer them something to show how I’ve missed them," she said. She acknowledged the support of her fans, stating, "They paid for tickets. They bought my records. They gave me that luxury. So the least I can do is tell them that I’m alive."
Stiff person syndrome, described as a rare neurological disorder that causes muscle stiffness and spasms, has impacted Dion's ability to perform and her signature vocals. She first disclosed her diagnosis in 2022, canceling her tour dates at the time. In a video shared on Instagram, she described the spasms as affecting her daily life, causing difficulties with walking and singing.
Despite the challenges, Dion has expressed optimism about her recovery. In a May 2024 interview, she stated that her "happiness has come back" and that the condition is no longer a significant burden. "I believe in myself, in my bravery," she added, determined not to let SPS control her life and confident in her ability to perform again.
