Celine Dion is set to embark on a 16-show comeback residency in Paris, marking her return to the stage after a six-year hiatus. The performances, scheduled throughout September and October at the Plenitude Arena, come as Dion continues to manage Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS), a rare neurological disorder.

Dion's preparation for the demanding schedule includes a rigorous training regime designed to enhance her physical capabilities. Her regimen features 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week, complemented by twice-weekly ballet and barre classes. These sessions aim to improve her strength and flexibility. Her home gym is equipped with weights, a treadmill, and a reformer machine to support her continued training.

Managing Stiff Person Syndrome

Stiff Person Syndrome causes severe muscle stiffness and painful spasms, and can lead to an unsteady gait, double vision, or slurred speech. While there is no cure for SPS, treatments can help manage symptoms and slow its progression. Dion was diagnosed with the condition in 2022 after experiencing a flare-up in 2020.

In addition to physical therapy, Dion's comprehensive rehabilitation plan includes new medication, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. She described her recovery process as a continuous cycle of falling and getting back up, expressing pride in her ability to achieve feats her body was not initially conditioned for.

Dion shared insights into the challenges of living with SPS in her 2024 documentary, "I Am: Celine Dion." Despite the difficulties, she has appeared in high spirits greeting fans in Paris in the days leading up to her shows. The residency is set to run through Autumn 2026 with additional dates planned for May 2027. Tickets for the comeback shows sold out instantly following their announcement in March.

During a three-year period of isolation from the public eye, Dion focused on her recovery and developed a deeper appreciation for nature. She shared a metaphor of barren autumn trees, symbolizing her own struggles, and her realization that support, like that from her fans, often comes not for what one can give, but for who one is.

The singer's last full traditional concert was in March 2020, concluding her Courage World Tour. She has since made only two brief public performances. Earlier performances include singing at the Paris Olympics in 2024 and a previous stage appearance in Riyadh. Dion acknowledged the less glamorous aspects of fame, such as signing autographs and preparing for public appearances, but expressed a readiness to return to work, emphasizing the rewards of performing for her audience.
