Carey Mulligan has a firm household rule: no music playing in the home. Her husband, Marcus Mumford, frontman of Mumford & Sons, explained that this preference is rooted in his own inability to engage in conversation when music is present.
Mumford shared on the "SmartLess" podcast that he cannot handle background music because if it is on, he becomes too absorbed in listening to switch off that part of his brain. This often leads to him disengaging from conversations, a situation Mulligan dislikes.
"So then Carey doesn’t like having music in the house because I just stop having a conversation," Mumford stated. He recounted a recent birthday party where guests noticed the absence of music, prompting him to explain their home's policy.
Mulligan, 41, will reportedly signal to Mumford, 39, when he becomes too lost in the music, often saying, "You've gone." This prompts him to suggest turning the music off.
The couple, who met as children at Bible camp, reconnected years later. Mulligan sent a note with her email address to Mumford after attending a show where he was performing. This led to their romance, marriage in 2012, and the birth of their three children: daughter Evelyn, 10; son Wilfred, 8; and an unnamed daughter born in 2023.
Mumford & Sons released their latest album, "Prizefighter," in February and are currently on tour in the United States. Mulligan recently appeared in "Beef" Season 2, lent her voice to the animated film "Wildwood," and is slated to appear in Greta Gerwig's "Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew" in early 2027.
