Actress Carey Mulligan has implemented a ban on music in her home, citing it as too distracting, a decision that might seem counterintuitive given her marriage to Marcus Mumford, the lead singer of the Grammy-winning band Mumford & Sons.

Mulligan, 41, revealed that even during a birthday party, the absence of music was noticeable. When questioned, she explained that playing music prompts her to actively listen, preventing her from fully engaging in conversation.

"If music's on, I want to lean in and listen to it. I can't switch that part of my brain off," Mumford said, relaying his wife's reasoning. "So Carey doesn't like having music in the house because I just stop having a conversation."

Mulligan and Mumford, 39, first met as children at a summer camp. They maintained contact through letters before losing touch for approximately a decade. The couple reconnected when Mulligan was 24 and married in 2012. They have three children: Evelyn, 10, Wilfred, 8, and a younger daughter born in late 2023.

Earlier admissions from Mulligan highlighted her youthful assessment of Mumford, whom she met again as adults while both were independently hired for the Coen Brothers film "Inside Llewyn Davis." She recounted writing in her diary at age 12 that while Mumford was the "kindest person" she had ever met, he was "definitely wasn't boyfriend material."
