Caravan holidays are experiencing a significant surge in popularity across the United Kingdom, with Britons opting for domestic breaks amidst concerns about international travel uncertainties, including jet fuel supply and global conflicts. This trend has seen a boom in bookings for caravan and motorhome parks, with companies like Haven, Away Resorts, and Waterside Holiday Parks reporting increased demand.

Evolution of the Caravan Holiday

The modern caravan holiday offers a stark contrast to the perceived basic accommodations of the past. Parks now feature enhanced amenities and more comfortable living spaces, often comparable to hotel rooms. Static and portable caravans are increasingly well-equipped, boasting features such as fully equipped kitchens, multiple televisions, and even dishwashers. This elevated standard of accommodation is a key factor in the resurgence of interest.

Several celebrities have publicly embraced and promoted caravan holidays. Danny and Dani Dyer have even launched their own holiday park, featured in a reality show, drawing on Danny Dyer's childhood memories of caravan trips. Actress Stacey Solomon and her partner Joe Swash have also shared their positive experiences at Haven parks, noting the surprise and enjoyment of their children. Former TOWIE star Gemma Collins has spoken about enjoying a return to "basics" with caravan holidays, emphasizing fresh air and a break from pressure. Actor Shane Ritchie has explored various caravan sites across the UK in a Channel 5 series, and footballer Harry Maguire was spotted at a bingo hall on a caravan site.

Driving Factors Behind the Trend

Industry experts attribute the rise in caravan holidays to several factors. Andy Le Duc, director of marketing and communications at the Caravan and Motorhome Club (CAMC), highlighted the increasing demand from members seeking "flexible, great-value breaks" and the "freedom to explore at your own pace while enjoying the outdoors." Simon Palethorpe, chief executive of Haven, noted that the "quality of the accommodation and the comfort is just so much better than it used to be." Carl Castledine, CEO of Away Resorts, pointed to "jet fuel shortages, rising costs and global conflicts" as significant influences on holiday plans, leading to a "significant increase" in demand for UK staycations.

Waterside Holiday Parks has observed a rise in direct bookings, with CEO David Bennett stating that guests are seeking "quality experiences closer to home." He added that modern caravan and lodge holidays now offer "comfort, flexibility and hotel-standard accommodation in beautiful coastal locations." This is coupled with a "nostalgia factor," reminding people of traditional British family holidays, but with a vastly improved experience in terms of quality and facilities.

Haven reported hosting 3.9 million guests last year, with projections to reach 4 million by the end of 2026. The company has also seen a 10% year-on-year increase in Easter bookings. The appeal of these holidays extends to a wide demographic, with enhanced facilities and comfortable living spaces transforming the perception and reality of caravan park getaways.
