It has been nearly two decades since "Camp Rock" first premiered on the Disney Channel in 2008, drawing 8.9 million viewers and launching the careers of Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers.

The franchise is now seeing a resurgence with a third installment, for which Lovato and the Jonas Brothers served as executive producers. The new film features a returning Lovato as Mitchie Torres, with the story once again centering on aspiring talent competing for a chance to open for the fictional band Connect 3, portrayed by the Jonas Brothers.

Behind the Scenes

While the film was a commercial success, the period following its release marked a challenging time for its stars. Demi Lovato has been candid about her struggles with addiction and eating disorders, which intensified around the filming of "Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam." In 2010, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and underwent treatment for bulimia, self-harm, and addictions to cocaine and alcohol. Lovato has shared accounts of her drug use, including smuggling cocaine on airplanes and struggling with purging, with former co-star Alyson Stoner recalling an instance where she supported Lovato in a bathroom. Following a relapse and a near-fatal overdose in 2018, Lovato has been on a path to recovery, speaking openly about her experiences and the lasting effects, including temporary blindness and brain damage.

Lovato also detailed struggles with body image and disordered eating, citing instances where her management influenced her diet, such as restricting her to a watermelon cake for her birthday to encourage weight loss. She has since found sobriety and a renewed personal life, advocating for acceptance of life's fluctuations and holding onto hope through difficult times.

Jonas Brothers' Journey

The Jonas Brothers—Joe, Nick, and Kevin—were teenagers when they began their music careers, signing with Disney's Hollywood Records in 2007. Their roles in "Camp Rock" propelled them to global fame. The band members were notably known for wearing purity rings, symbolizing their commitment to abstinence before marriage.

However, the brothers experienced a significant falling out in 2013, leading them to pursue solo projects and a period of estrangement. Joe Jonas reflected in 2019 that their attempts to force creativity and unhealthy communication contributed to the rift. After reconciling, the band released new music and embarked on tours. Joe Jonas has also navigated personal turmoil, including a highly publicized divorce battle with Sophie Turner.

The Jonas Brothers have continued to release music and films, including "A Very Jonas Christmas Movie" last year, and are reprising their "Camp Rock" roles.

Alyson Stoner's Experience

Alyson Stoner, who was 15 when she filmed "Camp Rock," has also spoken about the mental and physical toll of childhood fame. She described the intense pressure, competition, and perfectionism within the industry, as well as traumatic experiences that were difficult to address due to contractual obligations.

Stoner revealed she battled multiple eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, exercise bulimia, and binge eating disorder, which led to hospitalization and rehabilitation at age 17. She described the demanding regimen she maintained, including extreme calorie restriction and excessive exercise, and noted that casting directors sometimes discouraged her due to her thinness. While in rehab, she was also diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and other conditions.

"Camp Rock" debuted on Disney Channel in 2008, with its sequel following two years later. The film's soundtrack included Lovato's debut single, "This Is Me."
