Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden were photographed together this week for the first time in roughly a year, renewing public interest in a marriage the couple have kept largely private since their 2015 wedding.

The actress and the Good Charlotte guitarist, who tied the knot 10 months after being introduced by Nicole Richie, are parents to daughter Raddix and son Cardinal. In interviews and podcast appearances over the past decade, Diaz and Madden have described a relationship shaped by candid discussions about sex, unconventional ideas about living arrangements and a commitment to therapy.

Diaz has spoken openly about her views on intimacy and domestic life. In a 2023 appearance on the Lipstick On the Rim podcast she said, "We should normalise separate bedrooms. to me, I would literally, I have my house, you have yours. We have the family house in the middle. I will go and sleep in my room. You go sleep in your room." She added that such an arrangement would include "a room in the middle for relations," while noting the hypothetical setup did not necessarily reflect her current arrangement with Madden.

Earlier comments by Diaz include frank discussions of her sexual preferences. Appearing in Playboy in 2010, she described herself as "primal" and said she enjoyed making love in the "open" air. On Chelsea Handler's Chelsea Lately in 2014 she urged greater public understanding of sexual anatomy, saying, "For me, the vagina is such an integral part of the body. We think the vagina is on the outside," and encouraging education and consensual engagement.

Both Diaz and Madden have cited therapy as a component of their relationship. Diaz told Joel Madden on his Artist Friendly podcast that therapy is a tool they "depend on," calling it a commitment to work on the marriage and a way to avoid repeating the same patterns.

The couple's 2015 ceremony was attended by a number of celebrity friends, and the pair issued a joint statement to People at the time saying, "We couldn't be happier to begin our new journey together surrounded by our closest family and friends." Guests reported at the wedding included Reese Witherspoon, Drew Barrymore, Gwyneth Paltrow, Samantha Ronson and Toni Collette. The wedding party reportedly included Nicole Richie and Drew Barrymore as bridesmaids, and Joel and Richie's son Sparrow served as ring bearer.

Madden and his twin Joel have also spoken about their relationships on podcasts, describing a strong respect — and a degree of bemused fear — for their partners. In one conversation the brothers called their wives "queens," with Benji Madden saying, "Go against my wife? Good luck. I don't even need to get involved." Joel Madden added, "We all respect our wives. They are absolutely our counterparts and we all have a healthy fear of our wives."

Diaz retired from acting after 2014's Annie and then made a surprise return to the screen in 2022. She has given relatively few interviews in recent years, but has spoken about how motherhood reshaped her life. In a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone she said, "In the last seven months I've entered the best phase of my life: motherhood!" She also described family life during the early COVID-19 lockdowns, noting that the period kept the family "within our little bubble," and that Madden, who works from home, was present for much of the time.

Diaz has recounted meeting Madden through his circle of friends and family, saying on the Anna Faris Is Unqualified podcast that she first encountered him because of his sister-in-law and brother-in-law. She described being struck by him on sight and later appreciating other qualities that made him "special." Madden, meanwhile, has written songs for their family and the couple have said their home life includes music and play for their children.

Their recent public appearance follows years of intermittent visibility and selective commentary in interviews and on podcasts. The couple's willingness to discuss subjects that many public figures treat privately — including sexual preference, sleeping arrangements and ongoing therapy — has been a consistent theme in the limited window they have given into their private life. Public reaction to their reunion this week centered on the contrast between their longstanding marriage and their relative absence from red carpets and major media events.

Representatives for Diaz and Madden did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the latest sighting. The couple has previously emphasized privacy around family matters while selectively discussing elements of their relationship in public fora.
