A growing number of Britons are choosing to spend their summer holidays in "fringe" cities, areas located on the outskirts of major urban centers, in an effort to save money and find more affordable accommodation. This trend, highlighted in Airbnb's latest Travel Trend Forecast, indicates a shift away from traditional coastal or countryside retreats towards less conventional city destinations.
These "fringe" locations offer travelers a strategic advantage, providing easier access to major events like concerts, festivals, and sporting fixtures while serving as a more affordable and calmer base compared to staying directly in city centers. Lisa Marçais, General Manager for UKI, Northern Europe & MEA at Airbnb, noted that guests are increasingly drawn to these destinations for their ability to offer "the best of both worlds" and that searches for such locations have increased by as much as 140 percent year-on-year.
