Michelle Wylie, a 38-year-old from the United Kingdom, has identified the man who appeared in photographs from her November 2021 wedding after a four-year search. The previously unidentified guest, Andrew Helliman, 33, told reporters he had accidentally attended the wrong ceremony.
Wylie and her husband, John, were married at the Carlton Hotel in Prestwick, Ayrshire, when Wylie first noticed an unfamiliar man in the official photos. Friends and family could not identify him, and Wylie said the mystery lingered through the years despite repeated social media posts asking for help.
Helliman, a painter and decorator, said he had been a plus-one for his partner, who was serving as a bridesman at a different wedding for a friend named Michaela. The friend reportedly provided Helliman with the wrong venue. Helliman said he believed the ceremony was at the Carlton Hotel and arrived shortly before the procession, only to realize partway through that the bride walking down the aisle was not the friend he had come to celebrate.
"I was at the wrong wedding!" Helliman told SWNS after seeing his image online. He said he could not discreetly leave during the ceremony and waited through the vows before slipping out and traveling to the correct venue, the Great Western Hotel in Ayr. Photographers at Wylie’s ceremony captured images of Helliman seated in the crowd, which prompted Wylie’s long-running effort to learn his identity.
Wylie said she repeatedly shared the photographs on Facebook over the years but made no progress until contacting a popular content creator known as Dazza, who has hundreds of thousands of followers on social platforms. After Dazza reposted the images, Wylie said Helliman was identified within two hours.
The two met in person this week. Wylie said she found Helliman’s explanation"so funny," and that learning his side of the story "put a lot of smiles on people’s faces." Helliman said the incident became a talking point at the other wedding he attended that day, and he later recounted the mix-up to many guests.
Wylie, who works as a digital facilitator for the National Health Service, said the encounter adds an unexpected anecdote to her wedding memories. She and Helliman said they plan to keep in touch. The case illustrates how social media and influencer outreach can quickly resolve lingering personal mysteries, even years after an event.
