Country music star Brad Paisley has spoken out in defense of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's recent wedding, describing it as "one of the least pretentious weddings" he has ever witnessed. The event, held on July 3 at Madison Square Garden, has reportedly drawn criticism from some guests who characterized it as "tacky" and "chaotic."
Paisley, along with his wife, actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley, was among the approximately 1,000 guests at the ceremony. The couple exchanged vows in a castle-inspired setting within the New York City arena, which was reportedly transformed for the occasion at a cost of $20 million. The celebration featured an extensive guest list of celebrities, a large dessert spread, and performances by artists like Paul McCartney and Stevie Nicks.
Speaking to the Associated Press, Paisley emphasized the genuine nature of the event. "It meant a lot to be [invited]. It was, kind of, a big thank you from her to invite us," he said, referencing his long-standing relationship with Swift, whom he supported as an opening act on her tour when she was a teenager.
Swift and Kelce implemented strict measures to maintain privacy for the wedding. Guests were not informed of the exact location until the morning of the event, and all phones and smart devices were collected and secured until guests departed. Paisley described the invitation process as a "cat-and-mouse game," noting the specific instructions given to attendees about discretion.
"They were very clear with the invite, and I took this personally when I got the invite, because in the invite, it said, 'If you're getting this, you mean a lot to us,'" Paisley shared. He explained that he and his wife readily accepted the invitation, with Kimberly Williams-Paisley expressing strong enthusiasm.
In addition to the wedding festivities, Swift and Kelce reportedly donated $26 million to over 20 charities across the United States. The Paisleys' nonprofit grocery organization was among the recipients. They publicly expressed gratitude for the "transformative" gift, highlighting its importance during a period of high food insecurity.
Kimberly Williams-Paisley's sister, Ashley Williams, assisted with her preparations for the event. Williams noted that her sister was concerned about keeping track of time without access to a smartphone, prompting Brad Paisley to purchase a watch to monitor the hours during the phone-free ceremony.
