Boy George has withdrawn from his role in the West End production of Jesus Christ Superstar, citing controversy surrounding his new pro-Israel song, "We Will Dance Again." The singer was scheduled to perform as King Herod from August 3 to 15, but his management confirmed his departure on Thursday, days before his stint was set to begin.

The controversy stems from the lyrics of "We Will Dance Again," which Boy George stated is "pro peace" and reflects his emotional response after visiting the Nova Exhibition and speaking with families affected by the October 7 attacks in Israel. The song's title has become a phrase used by Israelis to express hope following the attacks.

In a statement, Boy George addressed accusations of insensitivity, saying, "The suggestion that I feel no compassion for Palestinians is both untrue and absurd. I am devastated for the loss of the innocent lives on both sides of this war and I call for peace." He also noted, "I have read members of the press calling me a 'genocide denier' yet those who deny the suffering of Israelis are given a free pass."

His manager, Paul Kemsley, confirmed the decision on Instagram, stating it was made "with the utmost respect for the producers, the creative team and the entire company." Kemsley added that the decision was made to allow the production to remain the focus and ensure everyone involved could move forward with mutual respect.

The song's lyrics include lines such as, "You say genocide, I say war / When you're attacked, that's what the army's for." He also references the Hamas attack, singing, "Young girls raped against trees / Murdered brutally / For the crime of dancing." The chorus includes, "There will be no war / But if you're ever confused / I stand with the Jews / I don't feel brave, I just need to behave like a human."

Boy George previously faced criticism in April for participating in Eurovision after organizers decided against banning Israel from competing. At the time, he defended his stance, emphasizing his long-standing Jewish friendships and stating, "The job of music is to unite people."

The role of King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar is being rotated among several actors, including Richard Armitage, Layton Williams, Julian Clary, Simon Russell Beale, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. The production, which features Sam Ryder as Jesus, Tyrone Huntley as Judas, and Desmonda Cathabel as Mary Magdalene, is set to transfer to London's Theatre Royal Drury Lane in October. A nationwide tour is also planned for next year, with Ryder continuing in the title role.

Boy George expressed regret for any disappointment caused to fans who had purchased tickets specifically to see him perform.
