The Boston Symphony Orchestra and its musicians have agreed to a 48-hour extension of their collective bargaining agreement, allowing more time for negotiations and averting a potential strike. The extension is set to last until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday.

The Boston Musicians' Association had authorized a strike ahead of the expiration of the union's three-year contract at 11:59 p.m. Sunday. The agreement on the extension comes pending a ratification vote by the Boston Musicians' Association and the Boston Symphony Orchestra Players' Committee, which could indicate progress toward a new contract.

The orchestra's current season is scheduled to begin September 17. Relations between the orchestra and management have been strained since the BSO announced in March its decision to part ways with music director Andris Nelsons at the end of his 13-season tenure next summer.
