The new season of the reality show Big Brother has generated controversy as one contestant, Yasmin, a 29-year-old teacher from Manchester, is taking up to eight weeks off work to participate. Her extended absence at the start of the school year has drawn criticism from viewers, particularly parents who face fines for unauthorized student absences.
Viewers have taken to social media platform X to voice their disapproval, with some questioning how a teacher can take such a significant amount of time off while parents are penalized for their children's school absences. Current regulations in the UK impose fines of £80, increasing to £160 if not paid within 28 days, for five or more unauthorized school days per parent. A second offense within three years can also lead to higher fines.
Despite the backlash, Yasmin has also garnered positive attention from other viewers who appreciate her energy and personality. Comments on X have described her as having a "vibe," being "lovely," and bringing "good first impressions" with her "bubbly, funny and entertaining" demeanor.
The current series features 16 contestants competing for a £100,000 prize. Hosts AJ Odudu and Will Best have indicated that the show will feature numerous twists throughout the season, with the potential for past contestants to return.
Additionally, a "mole" contestant has been introduced for a one-week stint to create disruption within the house, with the public aware of their identity. This mole will have the power to nominate three other contestants for eviction. The show's format aims to keep viewers engaged with a constantly changing dynamic, described by the hosts as feeling "a new house every week."
The spin-off show, Big Brother: The Group Chat, hosted by GK Barry and Kate Lawler, will air after the main program, featuring interviews and guest appearances. Last year's winner was Richard Storry, with Elsa Rae as the runner-up. Reports earlier this year suggested that a celebrity version of the show was not planned to return due to difficulties in attracting high-profile stars.
