Actor Bella Ramsey stars in the newly released film "Sunny Dancer," which follows a cancer survivor navigating "chemo camp" and discovering friendship, love, and freedom. The film was written and directed by George Jaques, who drew inspiration from personal experiences.

Jaques stated that the film is not a direct retelling of his family's story, but rather incorporates elements of his own journey. His mother was diagnosed with cancer when he was 15, but it took him eight years to process and translate those experiences into a script. "You have to sort of get through and understand it and have that reflection of it," Jaques commented on his writing process.

He collaborated with the Teenage Cancer Trust to ensure authenticity, speaking with young cancer survivors and parents who had lost children. Jaques noted that the survivors he met advised against using terms like "kids" or calling them "brave." These conversations significantly shaped the film, leading him to cast two of the young people he met in the movie.

During the film's premiere in Berlin, Jaques experienced a moment of profound emotion, realizing the significance of his mother's presence in the audience. "I remember seeing my mother and I realised there's a version of that movie where my mum wasn't sitting in the audience," he recalled.

Ramsey, known for their role in "Game of Thrones" and "The Last of Us," has spoken about their own past wishing for a more rebellious teenage period. This sentiment is reflected in the film's exploration of finding oneself amidst challenging circumstances.

Jaques also shared that the filmmaking process brought back his own fears surrounding loss. The film aims to capture the resilience and spirit of young people facing cancer, emphasizing their strength and individuality.
