The upcoming Beatles biopic, directed by Sam Mendes, features its lead actors recreating the iconic 1969 Abbey Road album cover. The film's cast, including Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, were spotted on the famous zebra crossing outside Abbey Road Studios.
Dickinson, portraying Lennon, led the scene dressed in a white suit and shirt, followed by Keoghan, Mescal, and Quinn. The recreated image mirrors the original album cover, which was shot by photographer Iain Macmillan. Macmillan famously had only ten minutes to capture the shot, directing the band to walk back and forth across the crossing.
Initially, it was reported that Westminster council had disallowed filming at the iconic location. However, the council later confirmed to the Daily Mail that filming would proceed, with authorities collaborating with production teams to facilitate the shoot.
On set, a replica of John Lennon's distinctive psychedelic Rolls-Royce Phantom V was also present, a vehicle significant to the Beatles' history. The car, originally black, was famously repainted bright yellow in 1967 and adorned with elaborate decorative designs.
Daniel Hoffmann-Gill was also seen portraying Mal Evans, the band's chief roadie and former bouncer. Evans was a consistent presence throughout the Beatles' tours and recording sessions.
The project, titled 'The Beatles: A Four-Film Cinematic Event', was announced last year. This marks the first time surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with the families of the late John Lennon and George Harrison, have granted rights for feature films about them. The ambitious anthology will consist of four films, each exploring the band's journey from their early days in Liverpool to global superstardom and eventual breakup, told from the perspective of each band member. The films are scheduled for a simultaneous release in 2028.
