An internal investigation and the subsequent departure of a lead actress have created a stir behind the scenes of the West End production of 'Oliver!' Shanay Holmes, who played the role of Nancy, reportedly raised concerns about co-star Aaron Sidwell, who portrayed Bill Sikes, alleging he had been physically rough with her during their scenes. The investigation, which is understood to have lasted between seven and nine weeks last summer, led to Holmes declining to perform opposite Sidwell. During this period, her understudy, Ava Brennan, stepped into the role.

Holmes' acclaimed performance as Nancy had previously earned her the opportunity to perform the ballad 'As Long as He Needs Me' for King Charles at the 2024 Royal Variety Performance. However, in September, Holmes announced her departure from the show. Her exit was met with further intrigue when fans noticed what appeared to be a lack of public support from some fellow cast members, with several, including Simon Lipkin who plays Fagin, unfollowing Holmes on Instagram.

The controversy appeared to escalate when Sidwell, known for his role in 'EastEnders,' posted a now-deleted message on X (formerly Twitter) shortly after Holmes' departure was announced. The post included lyrics from Green Day's song 'Too Much Too Soon,' featuring the lines: ‘Farewell, see you in hell, I hope you rest in pieces, f*** you.’

Reports indicate that cast members were asked to sign non-disclosure agreements amid concerns that the allegations and backstage tensions could impact the reputation of the popular musical. The outcome of the internal investigation has not been publicly disclosed. Holmes is scheduled to return to performing next week with a solo concert at Cadogan Hall.

Representatives for 'Oliver!' and the actors involved have declined to comment on the matter.
