Fans of Ariana Grande are analyzing her latest music video, "Petal," for hidden messages following its release and the singer's announcement of a hiatus from public life. The video, which features Grande, 33, portraying a struggling actress in the 1960s, has drawn attention for its depiction of harsh judgment and criticism.
In one scene, the character played by Grande faces a panel of industry figures who deem her "unmarketable," "unattractive," and "inauthentic." One critic is shown scribbling a note suggesting she "lose a few lbs" and calling her "homely." The video culminates with the character dismembering the judges and receiving a standing ovation from other female auditionees.
Grande's representative confirmed that the singer plans to step back from public-facing work after her current "Eternal Sunshine" tour concludes on September 1. This decision aims to avoid ongoing public scrutiny. "She looks forward to finishing the tour and ending it on a high note, both healthily and happily, and then taking a much-deserved break from public-facing work and appearances," the representative told Variety.
The "Petal" video is intended as a commentary on the intense scrutiny Grande has faced throughout her career. However, the specific scene referencing weight has divided fans, particularly in light of recent discussions about her appearance. Some viewers interpreted the video as confirming concerns about her well-being, while others defended it as a clear social commentary.
Grande has previously addressed speculation about her weight, asserting that she is healthy. In a 2024 interview, she noted the danger in public comfort with commenting on others' looks and health, stating, "I've heard every version of it — of what’s wrong with me. And then you fix it, and then it's wrong for different reasons." She also recalled a period in her life when she was on antidepressants, drinking, and eating poorly, which resulted in a different physique that she considered unhealthy.
Last December, commentator Megyn Kelly publicly accused Grande of being "anorexic," remarks that Grande has addressed indirectly by emphasizing that health can manifest in various ways.
The singer released her eighth studio album, also titled "Petal," on Friday. The lead single, "Hate That I Made You Love Me," debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
