Ariana Grande recently paid tribute to the late Dolly Parton during her Eternal Sunshine concert stop in London. The gesture came just five days before the singer is set to take an indefinite break from showbusiness. On Thursday night, Grande, 33, began her seventh show at the O2 Arena by playing a 1974 video of Parton performing her hit "I Will Always Love You."
The arena was bathed in purple light as fans sang along and waved their arms in a celebration of the tribute. Parton, 80, died on Tuesday following a brief battle with cancer.
Grande's upcoming break from public-facing work was announced earlier in August during a concert in Chicago. She stated her intention to step back to "set boundaries" and that "human beings need a break sometimes." Her schedule has been demanding over the past five years, encompassing filming both parts of "Wicked," promoting the films, shooting "Focker-in-Law," and releasing two albums, "Eternal Sunshine" and "Petal," before embarking on her current tour. The singer has also withdrawn from her upcoming West End role in "Sunday in the Park with George."
A spokesperson for Grande confirmed the singer's plans to "take a step back from visibility after she completes the Eternal Sunshine Tour." The statement added that Grande "looks forward to finishing the tour and ending it on a high note, both healthily and happily, and then taking a much-deserved break from public-facing work and appearances, which has led to endless, ongoing public scrutiny." The spokesperson noted that the tour has been a "beautiful experience" and that Grande "loves her fans and has loved every minute of this tour so much."
A source close to the singer explained that the tour involves "a very physical and athletic performance which she performs at a healthy and high level."
Separately, Harry Styles also paid tribute to Parton during the first night of his Madison Square Garden residency on Wednesday. He expressed his gratitude to musicians who inspired him, saying, "Dolly thank you so much." His band then performed "I Will Always Love You" alongside the 1974 track, with Styles encouraging the audience to sing along.
