Apple TV has officially announced that the spy thriller "Slow Horses" has been renewed for an eighth season. This renewal comes on the eve of the show's sixth season premiere and follows its recent Emmy Award win for Outstanding Directing.

Season 8 is set to adapt "Clown Town," the ninth novel in Mick Herron's "Slough House" book series. According to the official synopsis, this season will feature an explosive confrontation between Jackson Lamb, played by Sir Gary Oldman, and Diana Taverner, portrayed by Kristin Scott Thomas. A botched attempt to blackmail the Park will put Taverner on the offensive, leading Lamb to uncover and neutralize one of MI5's darkest secrets.

The novel "Clown Town" synopsis hints at Taverner being in a difficult situation due to an operation from the past that exposed unpleasant aspects of state security. Those involved are threatening to reveal details, but Taverner sees an opportunity and is seeking a suitable scapegoat, with Jackson Lamb in her sights. Lamb, the head of Slough House, intends to avoid sending his agents into a dangerous situation, but notes that any harm befalling them would not be his fault if they disregard his instructions. However, he considers them his agents, and any failure to return safely would result in consequences.

"Slow Horses," which debuted in 2022, has been a consistent critical success. Decider noted in its review of Season 6 that the series "consistently cements itself as one of television’s most compelling, high-quality shows." The show's sixth season is scheduled to premiere on September 16, and a seventh season has already been filmed. Season 5's finale aired less than a year prior to this renewal announcement. Season 6 received a Certified Fresh 100% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, contributing to the demand for more episodes.

Jay Hunt, creative director for International at Apple TV, expressed delight at the renewal, stating, "'Slow Horses' continues to charm audiences all around the world and I’m delighted that Jackson Lamb and his gang of lovable misfits will be back for an eighth season. Their acerbic take on the high-octane world of espionage is completely unique."

If "Slow Horses" maintains its annual release schedule, Season 8 could potentially premiere in 2028. Further official updates are expected. Seasons 1 through 5 of "Slow Horses" are currently available for streaming on Apple TV, with new episodes premiering on Wednesdays.
