Anya Taylor-Joy has offered a rare glimpse into her marriage to musician Malcolm McRae, stating that their relationship has provided her with a sense of security that emboldens her to take more risks.
"To have a best friend who goes through life with you – it has given me a sense of security that I didn’t really ever dream about," Taylor-Joy told Elle UK. "Now that I have it, I just feel emboldened to take more risks because I know I’ve got something really nutritive and solid and healthy and so f*****g fun. I laugh, like, 90% of the time."
Taylor-Joy and McRae, who is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist for the duo SRCHR, married in April 2022 after meeting in a music studio. McRae also has a small acting role as Eric in Taylor-Joy's latest venture, the Apple TV+ series "Lucky."
The series, which premiered on July 15, stars Taylor-Joy as con artist Luciana 'Lucky' Armstrong, who goes on the run after a heist doesn't go as planned. She is pursued by the FBI and a crime boss played by Annette Bening. "Lucky" also marks Taylor-Joy's first producing role.
"I’ve always been interested in not just why something works, but how it works," she said of her producing experience. "I felt like I’d been doing it [producing] for a while. It just hadn’t been part of my job title."
She also reflected on lessons learned from leadership, noting, "It’s not your job to freak out, it’s your job to find solutions and soothe everybody else." Taylor-Joy also shared her father's motto: "the harder I work, the luckier I’ll get," and her mother's advice to "be myself."
"Lucky" has received a range of reviews from critics. Some publications described the series as "tediously formulaic," while others have praised Taylor-Joy's performance as "riveting." The Daily Telegraph awarded the series two stars, calling it a "mash-up of Pulp Fiction and one of those Nineties Leonard adaptations." RogerEbert.com also gave two stars, criticizing it as an example of "the 'Why Isn’t This a Movie' problem of the modern streaming era." The Guardian awarded three stars, labeling it "classic summer viewing" but noted it "refuses to commit to its nonsense." In contrast, NME gave "Lucky" four stars, describing it as "instantly gripping, filled with twists and lots of fun" and praising Taylor-Joy's action sequences.
Elsewhere in the interview, Taylor-Joy described Taylor Swift's wedding to Travis Kelce as "wonderful."
