Veteran actor Anthony Hopkins, 88, is embarking on a new career path as a classical music composer with the release of his debut album through Decca Classics. The album, titled "Life is a Dream," is set to be released on August 21, 2026, and features compositions written by Hopkins over many years.

Hopkins, who has accumulated over 150 acting credits in a career spanning more than 65 years, has a long-standing connection to music. He began playing the piano at age 4 and reportedly started performing works by Beethoven and Chopin just a few years later.

"Music was my first desire, my first wish," Hopkins stated. "I’ve been composing music all my life. Some of these pieces have lived with me for decades, and I still find myself returning to them."

The album was recorded in London in April 2026 and features performances by the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. Cellist Gregorio Nieto and classical pianist Sergio Tiempo are also credited on the recording.

The first single to be released from the album is "Bracken Road," from Hopkins' "1947: Suite for Solo Piano and Orchestra." The record label noted that the track is inspired by his childhood memories from Margam, South Wales. Decca Classics described the album as showcasing a composer whose music shares "the same emotional depth and storytelling that define his screen career."

Hopkins reflected on the significance of the album and his collaboration with Decca, stating, "Signing with Decca is the honour of a lifetime. It has been a true privilege to collaborate with the distinguished Philharmonia Orchestra and the virtuoso soloists... My deepest gratitude and respect go to Maestro Gustavo Dudamel, whose artistry is an integral part of this musical journey."

Hopkins has previously composed music for several film and television projects, including "Elyse" (2020), "Slipstream" (2007), and "August" (1996). He also released a classical music album titled "Composer" in 2012, and his single "Distant Star" reached No. 75 on the UK Singles Chart in 1986.

His mother, Annie, had wanted him to become a concert pianist, but Hopkins pursued acting after receiving a scholarship to a college of music and drama. He has previously stated that he became an actor "by default."
