The final installment of Netflix's popular young adult series, 'Heartstopper Forever,' features a significant cast change, with Anna Maxwell Martin stepping into the role of Sarah Nelson, Nick's mother. Academy Award-winning actress Olivia Colman, who previously portrayed Sarah in the first two seasons, will not be returning for the concluding film.
Colman's absence from 'Heartstopper Forever' is attributed to scheduling conflicts. She was occupied filming other projects during the production of the film, which took place in June and July of 2025. Alice Oseman, the author of the 'Heartstopper' graphic novels and writer for the series, confirmed the recasting in an interview with Tudum.
"Sadly, Olivia Colman was not able to join us for the film, so we made the very difficult decision to recast the role, rather than exclude the character," Oseman stated. "We are deeply grateful for Olivia’s beautiful performance as Sarah in Seasons 1 and 2 of Heartstopper, through such iconic moments as Nick coming out as bisexual, and we know that her performance will live on in the hearts of every Heartstopper fan."
Anna Maxwell Martin, known for her roles in "Philomena," "Becoming Jane," and the television series "Motherland" and "Ludwig," has been selected to portray Sarah Nelson. Oseman expressed enthusiasm for Martin's casting, saying, "We are overjoyed to welcome the incredible Anna Maxwell Martin into the role of Sarah for Heartstopper Forever. Anna perfectly embodies Sarah’s gentle, down-to-earth energy, and it was magical to witness her scenes with Kit Connor during the film shoot. I can’t wait for Heartstopper fans to experience her interpretation of Sarah Nelson."
Colman had previously shared her positive experience with the series, telling Variety that she accepted the role before reading the script and was moved by its message of acceptance. Her portrayal of Sarah Nelson, particularly during Nick's coming-out moments, was a standout element for viewers.
