Beninese singer-songwriter Angélique Kidjo has made history by receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The 66-year-old artist is the first Black woman from Africa to be recognized with this honor, joining more than 2,800 stars on the iconic Los Angeles landmark.

Kidjo, a four-time Grammy winner, has released 18 albums throughout her career and received 17 Grammy nominations. Her musical journey began in Benin, but she relocated to Paris in 1983, citing the oppressive communist regime that had taken hold in her home country. "From the moment the communist regime arrived in Benin, I became aware that the freedom we enjoy can be snatched away in a second," Kidjo stated in a 2023 interview with the BBC.

The Walk of Fame ceremony was a vibrant celebration of Kidjo's extensive career, marked by singing and dancing. Her work has featured collaborations with prominent artists such as Burna Boy, John Legend, Bono, and Alicia Keys. Her latest album, HOPE!!, released earlier this year, includes collaborations with Ayra Starr, Quavo, Nile Rodgers, and Diane Warren, with production by Pharrell Williams.

Beyond her musical achievements, Kidjo is recognized for her humanitarian work. She serves as a goodwill ambassador for Unicef and Oxfam and is the co-founder of the Batonga Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting vulnerable young girls and women in Benin. Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, praised Kidjo at the event, noting her ability to "connect cultures, cross borders, and remind audiences everywhere that while we may come from different backgrounds, her music unites in a way that few other things can."

Actor Willem Dafoe, speaking at the ceremony, described Kidjo as "without a doubt the hardest working woman in showbusiness." He likened her electrifying stage presence to that of soul singer James Brown. "She's not only an incredible performer, songwriter and musician, but also an incredibly kind and giving person and a real deal activist," Dafoe added. Kidjo now joins Charlize Theron as another prominent figure of African descent with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
