Andrew Garfield has faced online backlash and mockery after stating he hopes billionaires will be "scared s***less" by his upcoming film, "The Uprising." The historical action drama, which explores the 1381 Peasants' Revolt in England, is set for release in U.S. theaters on September 10.
Garfield, 43, made the comments during a discussion about the film at The Grove in Los Angeles. When asked about the audience's takeaway, he expressed his hope that the film would frighten wealthy individuals. His remarks quickly drew criticism on social media platforms.
Spencer Pratt, known from "The Hills," questioned Garfield's stance, pointing out the financial backing of the film industry. "You mean...like the billionaires who greenlight your movies and stroke all your multi-million dollar paychecks? Or they good?" Pratt wrote on X, adding that Garfield himself had reportedly earned $5 million for his role as billionaire Sam Altman in the film "Artificial."
Others echoed similar sentiments. Noam Blum, Chief Technology Officer of Tablet Magazine, posted on X, "More billionaires were involved in making this than will probably ever watch it." Columnist John William Sherrod commented on Garfield, a multi-millionaire actor, "cosplaying as a put upon member of the working class."
Commentators also raised questions about the perceived divide between millionaires and billionaires, with one user on X stating, "I love how millionaires are trying to make billionaires the problem." Another remarked, "Oh look, the Dem Socialist multimillionaire is lecturing the billionaires about their wealth. I guess there are levels to this hypocrisy."
Garfield's reported net worth is approximately $16 million as of 2026, according to Celebrity Net Worth. His career includes significant roles in high-budget productions, such as "The Amazing Spider-Man" films, which had production budgets ranging from $200 million to $293 million and collectively grossed around $1.4 billion globally. He also starred in "Hacksaw Ridge" (2016), with a reported box office of $180 million, and is set to portray OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in "Artificial," a film with a $40 million budget slated for a late 2026 release.
In "The Uprising," Garfield plays Ploughman, a leader of a rebellion against King Richard II. The film is described as being "based on the true story of the uprising that inspired the legend of Robin Hood."
During the L.A. event, Garfield also shared that he hoped "The Uprising" would be "galvanizing" and inspire an "awakening," reflecting the struggles of the characters in the film. He told Deadline in a separate interview that he was drawn to the project because it felt like an "antidote to the disenfranchisement and an isolation and an anxiety and an awareness that the world is out of joint," highlighting a perceived lack of accountability for injustices.
"Every day it was a repeat enragement every morning," Garfield said, explaining his motivation for participating in the film. "And I read this, and I thought, Well, here’s a response to that."
