A country singer's original song choice sparked a significant disagreement among the judges on "America's Got Talent" during Tuesday night's auditions. Elsie, a 32-year-old singer-songwriter from Mississippi, performed a self-written country anthem, hoping to advance her music career.
While all four judges — Simon Cowell, Mel B, Howie Mandel, and Sofía Vergara — acknowledged Elsie's vocal talent and star quality, they diverged on the effectiveness of her original song. Mel B complimented Elsie's voice but suggested a different song might have better showcased her capabilities. "I think your voice is so much bigger and better than what you just showed us," Mel B stated.
Howie Mandel delivered the sole "no" vote of the night, expressing uncertainty about Elsie's identity as an artist based on the performance. "I want to know who you are. I have no idea who you are yet," Mandel said, a comment that was met with loud boos from the audience.
Sofía Vergara, however, disagreed with Mandel's assessment, believing the song choice was simply a misstep. "I'm gonna say yes because I want to give you another chance," Vergara said. Simon Cowell also saw potential, advising Elsie against over-preparation and encouraging a more raw performance. "You have star potential. You have a glow about you," Cowell remarked.
Despite Mandel's rejection, Mel B joined Cowell and Vergara in voting "yes," allowing Elsie to advance to the next round. Backstage, Elsie expressed her willingness to adapt, stating, "I'm from Mississippi. I'll go out there and stomp and clap and sing with no music, OK?"
Cowell, who has previously discussed his ability to spot talent early in auditions, noted the importance of an audience's energy in a performance. He also emphasized his passion for discovering individuals who may not have had prior opportunities in the music industry.
