Alison Arngrim, known for her portrayal of Nellie Oleson in the original "Little House on the Prairie" series, has made a surprise appearance in the Netflix reboot, 43 years after the initial show concluded. Arngrim, 64, returns to the franchise not as her iconic character, but as a new figure named Ida.

Ida, described by Arngrim as a "crazy lady in the woods" and a "forest drifter with drifter friends," is featured in the second episode of the reboot. She encounters the Ingalls girls as they search for John Edwards. Arngrim's appearance as Ida is a stark contrast to her previous role, with the character sporting a disheveled look, including rotting teeth and dirt on her face, reflecting the harsh realities of frontier life.

The actress shared that she was cast for the role just weeks before filming began in Winnipeg, Canada. "I got a phone call: 'What are you doing in a week and a half? Could you come to Winnipeg? There's this character, we want it to be you,'" Arngrim recalled in an interview with Tudum. She embraced the opportunity, noting, "I thought, 'Oh, that’s creepy as all get‑out. That sounds right up my alley. I’ll be right over!'"

During her time on the original series, which ran from 1974 to 1982, Arngrim played Nellie Oleson for 104 episodes across eight seasons. She reflected on the lasting impact of her character, stating, "the trick is, if you do it right, everyone will hate you; and if you really do it right, they’ll eventually love you." Arngrim noted that while she played a villain, fans often express affection for Nellie, calling the character "iconic."

Arngrim also commented on the differences in costuming between the original series and the reboot. She was particularly impressed with the corsetry and authentic period costumes used in the new production, describing it as "fabulous."

Regarding her transformation for the role of Ida, Arngrim explained the makeup process involved making her appear less well-cared-for, with painted teeth and nails to look "disgusting, filthy, and diseased." She said this was to accurately portray a woman of the 1800s living a rough life outdoors.

Arngrim's appearance in the reboot was a welcome development for the actress, who had previously joked about being old enough to play Mrs. Oleson and expressed interest in returning to the franchise. The "Little House on the Prairie" reboot is available on Netflix.
