Alicia Silverstone is set to reprise her iconic role as Cher Horowitz in a sequel series for Paramount+, with production scheduled to begin next year in Los Angeles. The new project picks up 30 years after the 1995 cult classic film, with Cher navigating the challenges of motherhood to a teenager.
"Beloved Beverly Hills icon Cher Horowitz has figured out a lot," a logline for the series reads. "She's successful in business and has mastered motherhood – that is, until her daughter's high school years, and Cher finds that parenting a teenager makes her feel 'clueless' all over again."
Silverstone, who has embraced a vegan lifestyle since 1998, previously expressed her desire to honor the original film while bringing something new to the franchise. "I never thought that that was something I would ever do because I wouldn't want to mess up this thing that we all love so much," she told ET last year. "So we will do our very best to honor the original movie that we love and also bring something new to it."
The upcoming Paramount+ series will differ from a previously planned Peacock reboot that was reportedly scrapped last year. Silverstone last embodied Cher in a 2023 commercial for Rakuten that aired during Super Bowl LVII.
Details regarding the involvement of other original cast members, including Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Elisa Donovan, Donald Faison, Jeremy Sisto, Justin Walker, Twink Caplan, and Wallace Shawn, remain unconfirmed.
The original "Clueless" film, inspired by Jane Austen's "Emma," was a critical and commercial success, grossing $88 million worldwide. It also spawned a two-season sitcom spin-off from 1996 to 1999. The film's cultural significance was further recognized in January when it was inducted into the National Film Registry for preservation by the Library of Congress, and the City of Beverly Hills declared July 19 as "Clueless Day" last year.
