Sacha Baron Cohen's satirical character Ali G is preparing for a comeback in a new mockumentary titled "Ali G: Who Iz I?", aiming to connect with Generation Z. The film, set to be released in October, will see the faux-streetwise poseur from Staines navigate a changed world, two decades after his initial rise to fame.
Ali G first appeared on Channel 4's The 11 O'Clock Show in 1998, interviewing public figures before starring in Da Ali G Show from 2000. The character, known for his 'rude boy' accent, tracksuits, and gold chains, became a cultural icon for Gen X and Millennials. His past interviews include a notable Red Nose Day special in 2001 with David and Victoria Beckham. The character was retired by Cohen in 2007 due to his increasing recognizability, which hampered the effectiveness of his comedic premise.
A New Era for Satire
The upcoming film's trailer suggests Ali G will tackle contemporary trends, including poking fun at TikTok and ASMR content. Ali G's X/Twitter account has also featured him creating a Letterboxd account, a platform popular with Gen Z for logging film ratings and reviews. In a post, Ali G stated his intention to become a "gen z," listing the film "Cats" as a favorite. The trailer opens with Ali G reflecting on the past 20 years, mentioning events like the COVID-19 pandemic, wars, and Ed Sheeran, before announcing his return.
"Ali G: Who Iz I?" is described as a mockumentary where, after twenty years of "chillin', tokin' and bonin'," Ali G discovers his long-term girlfriend, Julie, played by Morgana Robinson, is eight months pregnant. To support his growing family, he heads to America to reclaim his former glory. The film follows the narrative of his 2002 film, "Ali G Indahouse."
Channel 4's head of factual entertainment, Alf Lawrie, previously suggested that characters like Ali G and Borat could not be made today due to stricter regulations and increased respect for contributors, stating that "TV has become a slightly more regulated environment than it was 20 years ago." However, Cohen appears ready to challenge contemporary sensitivities with this revival.
The film is scheduled for release in cinemas on October 23. The official Ali G Instagram account has shared a poster for the film, featuring the star in an oversized puffer jacket, a nod to the text speak used in the first film. This comeback marks a significant return for a character that defined a particular era of British satire.
