Alec Baldwin is facing criticism on social media for a tribute video posted in honor of the late actor Sam Neill. The nearly three-minute Instagram video, shared following Neill's death on Monday, has drawn backlash from viewers who described it as "self-centered" because Baldwin reportedly dedicated only the first 10 seconds and the final five seconds to Neill himself.
In the video, Baldwin began by stating, "I just wanted to come on here quickly and say, how stricken I was to learn of the death of Sam Neill." He then proceeded to reminisce about his 1989 filming of "The Hunt for Red October," naming cast members and discussing his experience on the film. Neill, who played Captain Vasili Borodin in the movie, was mentioned again towards the end of Baldwin's post.
"That is one of the few movies I have ever done where I remember the whole movie," Baldwin said, clarifying, "That’s what a fan I am of that work. Not me. I’m not a fan of my work, but I am a fan of their work."
He concluded by saying, "Anyway, oh my God. My God. Sam Neill. My love to his family, My love to his family."
Social media users reacted quickly, with one commenter on Instagram stating, "Omg I’m sorry I thought you were paying respects to Sam Neil. I didn’t realize it was all about you." Another user added, "You didn’t say anything about Sam," while a third quipped, "Damn. I kept waiting to hear some good things regarding Sam Neill. Not much of a tribute to Sam but just a name mention. Do better Alec."
However, some users defended Baldwin, interpreting his message as a genuine tribute. One comment read, "You always talk so calming, and compassionate and so kindly about all the people you have worked with, known. Sam Neill what a great actor." Another commenter noted, "Alec Baldwin talks to you like you’re a friend sitting or walking beside you. It’s great and tells you a lot about him as a person first and then an actor."
Sam Neill died at age 78 after recovering from cancer, his family announced. His passing was described as sudden and unexpected but occurred while he was cancer-free. His family stated that he "passed with the dignity that has characterized his whole life."
Following the news of Neill's death, tributes poured in from colleagues. Nicole Kidman, who starred with Neill in "Dead Calm," shared, "Sam was one of the greats, a joy to be around. We met when I was just 18, and he took me under his wing, and we stayed friends for life. He was charming, kind, funny and intelligent. He will be greatly missed, and my heart goes out to his family." Toni Collette, who worked with Neill on "A Long Way Down" and "Dirty Deeds," posted on Instagram Stories, "My friend Sam left us this morning. Yes, he was an incredible actor. But he was also the most beautiful, decent gentleman. A big hearted king with a dry, hilarious wit. I feel so lucky to have known him. When I think of Sam I always see him giggling. It is a terribly sad day. Rest in peace, dear Sam."
