Air New Zealand is set to roll out triple bunk beds, called SkyNests, in economy class on its ultra-long-haul flights, spanning 16 to 17.5 hours. These sleeping pods will be available on the route between Auckland and New York's JFK airport starting in December.

The SkyNests are designed as wedge-shaped pods accommodating six passengers, retrofitted into the rear of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. Passengers in economy and premium economy, aged 15 and above, can book these pods as an add-on service. The cost begins at approximately $215 (£215) for a four-hour slot, with two sessions bookable per passenger per flight.

Each pod offers a pillow, blanket, and an amenity kit that includes hand and body balm, an eye mask, earplugs, and socks. The beds themselves measure 203cm in length, comparable to a king-size bed, and taper from 64cm at the shoulders to 41cm at the footwell. A slightly see-through privacy curtain allows cabin crew to monitor for any safety or medical issues, while also preventing unauthorized use by extra passengers. Snacks are prohibited, though water will be permitted.

Passengers can choose their bunk position—top, middle, or bottom. The top bunk requires climbing steps, which may be inconvenient for frequent bathroom trips but offers a sense of separation. The middle bunk is the most accessible but feels more exposed to other pod occupants. The bottom bunk, positioned close to the floor, was found to be the most comfortable due to easier entry and exit, and a partition that extends further down.

Each sleeping space is equipped with a safety belt, a charging point, a reading light, and individual air vents. The sleeping slots become available after the dinner service and again five hours later, after cabin crew have reset the beds.

Passengers who have booked a £215 nest will be treated to a range of amenities, including bedding, ambient lighting, a privacy curtain and kits containing socks, skincare and earplugs

Air New Zealand's SkyNests are part of an effort to enhance the experience on its longest flights, offering a dedicated space for rest beyond the standard economy seat. More details can be found on the 'Economy Skynest' page on airnewzealand.co.uk.
