BritBox is set to premiere "Agatha Christie's Tommy and Tuppence," a new series that reimagines the beloved literary crime-solving couple for a contemporary audience. The show, premiering September 15, 2026, marks the first time the characters have been updated to solve a 21st-century murder mystery.
Thomas "Tommy" Beresford and Prudence L. "Tuppence" Cowley were introduced in Agatha Christie's 1922 novel, "The Secret Adversary." Initially depicted as childhood friends meeting after World War I, the characters evolved over Christie's works, appearing as newlyweds, parents, and even solving cases in their retirement years in the 1970s. Their adaptability over time makes them suitable for a modern reinvention.
"Tommy and Tuppence are university exes who meet each other at a wedding where a murder takes place," said Phoebe Eclair-Powell, writer and executive producer for the series. Director Fergus O'Brien described the show as "a really exciting blend of what's modern, what's classic, and what really works in that Agatha Christie genre."
O'Brien also noted that the series functions as a romantic comedy folded into a classic whodunnit, focusing on how the titular characters come together. "It's the story of how they come together," he stated.
The characters have been adapted for various media over the years, including radio, television, and film. Actors who have previously portrayed Tommy include Richard Attenborough, James Warwick, and David Walliams, while Tuppence has been played by Francesca Annis, Greta Scacchi, and Jessica Raine. The upcoming series stars Josh Dylan as Tommy and Antonia Thomas as Tuppence.
"Agatha Christie's Tommy and Tuppence" is a BritBox exclusive. Subscription to the streaming service is required to watch. New subscribers can currently get their first two months for $0.99 per month, after which the subscription renews at $10.99 per month.
