An Adelaide Crows fan has become the center of an online debate after her choice of costume for a recent AFL match was interpreted by some viewers as blackface. The fan was seen at the Adelaide Oval during the team's elimination final game against the Western Bulldogs, wearing a costume designed to resemble the club's mascot, Claude the crow.
Cameras captured the supporter, who was with the club's cheer squad, with her face painted black, complemented by a hat fashioned to look like a crow's eyes and beak. While the full costume, including large black wings, was not visible on broadcast, the face paint drew immediate reactions online. Some viewers expressed shock and disappointment, with one commenting, "In 2026. You'd expect it in 1926 perhaps. Why? Just, why?" Another stated, "It is blackface though. Accidental but still blackface."
The incident prompted a wider discussion about the perception of blackface, with many acknowledging the potential for unintended offense even if racist intent was not present. "Old mate dressing as a crow clearly didn't do it with the intention of being offensive," one user wrote, "But that doesn't take away the fact we are all old and aware enough to know that blackface in any form is unacceptable."
Others defended the fan, arguing that her intention was simply to create a realistic costume of the team's mascot and that the face paint was part of that effort. The fan herself spoke to The Advertiser, explaining her decision. "I just thought it would be more realistic (to wear black paint), that's why I've got black gloves as well," she said. "So I'm dressed like the mascot Claude the crow."
She also noted that many attendees found her costume to be "cool" and requested photos with her. Some commentators suggested that the controversy could have been avoided if the fan had opted for alternative ways to represent the crow mascot without using black face paint. "I would say that if I had a big crow hat on, that I wouldn't have to do blackface to convince everyone I was dressed as a crow," one person commented. Another speculated that the fan might not have considered how the costume would appear on television without the full ensemble, particularly the wings. "I'd imagine the bloke didn't think how it would look without the wings on TV."
