Following a fiery confrontation in House of the Dragon Season 3, Aegon II Targaryen finds himself permanently disfigured, without his dragon Sunfyre, and enduring near-constant pain. His immediate focus has been to remain hidden and conceal his identity from those he and Larys encounter.
Despite his physical suffering, Aegon's royal impulses continue to surface, complicating his efforts to lay low. Adding to his distress, he has learned that peasants have begun profiting from the maimed body of his dragon, Sunfyre, transforming it into a local tourist attraction.
Meanwhile, Larys Strong's plan to smuggle Aegon across the Narrow Sea to Braavos has faced numerous setbacks. During this period of evasion, Tyland Lannister, who seemingly survived his earlier ordeal in the Gullet, locates Aegon and Larys at Rook's Rest. Tyland proposes an alternative strategy: a retreat to Casterly Rock to establish a new Small Council and resume the war effort from the ancestral seat of House Lannister.
After assessing Tyland's capacity for delivering unvarnished advice, Aegon ultimately rejects the proposal. He instead opts to proceed with Larys' original plan to escape across the sea. Aegon's continued involvement is central to the endgame of the Targaryen civil war, indicating his role is far from over despite his current precarious situation.
