The Hulu comedy "Adults" featured a scene in its Season 2, Episode 4, titled "Racoon," that involved a threesome escalating into a foursome with the unexpected addition of a possum. Actors Owen Thiele and Jack Innanen, who play Anton and Paul Baker respectively, shared their experiences filming the scene with co-star Amita Rao, who plays Issa.
In the episode, Issa believes Paul Baker is interested in an open relationship and, upon finding him with Anton, initiates a threesome. The situation becomes more complicated when a possum that entered the house earlier climbs onto Issa during the encounter. This event transforms the intended threesome into a foursome.
Thiele described his initial reaction to the script, stating, "When I read that, I was like, ‘We’ve lost the plot.’ I was genuinely like, ‘What are we involved in? What is this?!'" He added that despite the unusual circumstances, the scene still managed to feel "sexy."
The actors noted the detailed choreography involved, including a specific leg grab by Paul Baker that kept Anton engaged in the scene. Innanen credited show co-creator Ben Kronengold for suggesting the detail. "There was like so much choreography," Innanen said. "We were making out for a long time. And I remember we changed it at one point. And did the hand grab. There was a lot of improv that got cut. But I need to give credit to Ben for that."
Anton's reaction to the possum on Issa's back also added a layer to the scene. Thiele explained that Anton had to choose between alerting Issa to the marsupial or continuing the intimate moment, and he chose the latter. This moment is followed by other characters discovering the possum and reacting with screams.
Amita Rao confirmed that the scene was enjoyable to film, despite the complexities. "We love Sanaz Toossi’s writing. She’s incredible," Rao said, referring to the episode's writer. "I loved the slapstick of that moment. It was so fun to play, especially when they let us do longer shots where Christine Ng, our DP, would just follow us around with the camera. We were making out for eight hours."
