An adopted woman, Abigail, from Yorkshire, England, became emotional while reading a letter from her biological sister, Melissa, who had been searching for her. The search was initiated with the hope of reuniting the sisters for their mother, Linda, who has Alzheimer's disease.

Linda became pregnant with Abigail, then named Rachael, at age 15. Her parents, who were from a traditional background and struggled financially, did not approve of out-of-wedlock births. Consequently, Linda was sent to a mother and baby home near Huddersfield, where Rachael was subsequently placed for adoption.

Linda was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's eight years ago. She is now nonverbal and uses a wheelchair. Melissa, Linda's second eldest child, contacted the program Long Lost Family to find her sister before their mother's condition deteriorated further.

"It's my last ditch attempt in the time that my mum's still got," Melissa stated, emphasizing the importance of a potential reunion for her mother's comfort. "If she was able to meet Rachael. If it's something that can give her some kind of comfort in some way, that would be really positive for all of us."

The Long Lost Family team successfully located Rachael, now known as Abigail, living in the same county as Melissa. Abigail, who has four children, including a son named Alfie who died shortly after premature birth, had always been curious about her birth mother despite having a positive adoption experience. Her birth mother had been on her mind since her teenage years.

Upon learning of her birth mother's dementia diagnosis, Abigail agreed to participate in the program. During her meeting with presenter Nicky Campbell, Abigail expressed her delight at seeing a photograph of Linda and learning that Melissa had initiated the search.

Abigail noted similarities in her life and Melissa's, particularly the names of her children. When presented with a letter from Melissa, Abigail was visibly moved. The letter read, "Dear Rachael, I have known about you since I was around ten years old. We've often wondered how your life has been and hoped that one day we might be able to find you. I wanted you to hear from me how loved you've always been. With love, Melissa."

Abigail responded to the letter, stating, "That's wonderful." The episode featuring their story was set to air on ITV and ITVX. The program aims to reunite individuals separated by adoption, providing closure and connection for families.
