The fourth season of Apple TV+'s "Ted Lasso" introduces new characters to AFC Richmond, including Gemma Jay, portrayed by Welsh actor Abbie Hern. Gemma joins the women's team as a striker and is revealed to be a former teammate of assistant coach Alice Chilton.

Gemma Jay's character has a background in professional football but has also pursued a law degree. This dual path has created a dynamic with Chilton that the characters must navigate as they work towards the team's goals. Actor Abbie Hern described the on-set relationship with Tanya Reynolds, who plays Alice, as collaborative and fun, hoping it translates to the screen.

"Gemma and Alice have a history, but I think they were both in very different places in their careers and lives when they played together," Hern told Decider. "And they have to try and figure out how they’re going to make it work, and how they are going to work to get Richmond to where they need to be."

Hern also spoke about her positive working relationship with Reynolds. "She’s genuinely one of the most talented people I have ever met, and the most real person I have ever met," Hern said of Reynolds. "She’s such a gift. And she made me feel so at ease. She was like, ‘OK, let’s just mess up and have fun together. Do you have any idea what’s going on? Neither do I.’ And I’m really hoping that translates on camera."

Abbie Hern, 29, made her acting debut in the 2020 reboot of "The Twilight Zone." Since then, her credits include "The Pact," "Peaky Blinders," "Enola Holmes 2," and "My Lady Jane." Hern is a graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. "Ted Lasso" Season 4 new episodes are available on Apple TV.
