Idanna Abignente, an 82-year-old Italian woman, has earned the title of "World's Oldest Pole Dancer" by competing in pole sport. She trains and competes multiple times a week, embracing the demanding physical activity as a passion.
Abignente began her pole journey about 12 years ago when a friend of her son's opened a studio in Turin. What started as a fitness challenge evolved into a dedicated passion. She now holds the title prominently displayed on her Instagram account, where she has garnered tens of thousands of followers.
As she approaches her 83rd birthday, Abignente continues to train at least two or three times a week. While she acknowledges her lack of competition in the over-80 age bracket, she actively seeks other competitors. The oldest competitor she has faced was a 74-year-old American in an event last year.
Abignente emphasizes that pole dancing is a rigorous sport, not merely an activity for performers. "It's a complete sport, but also a very demanding one," she stated. "You have to learn to trust your body and endure physical exertion. Like many sports, it leaves its marks." She believes that achieving her level requires tenacity, determination, consistency, and a high tolerance for pain.
Despite her age, Abignente has no plans to stop. "I’ll be 83 in September, I’m not pretending to be 40. But I don’t want the number to decide for me," she said, underscoring her commitment to her passion.
