BJ's Wholesale Club is planning to open up to 30 new locations over the next two years, expanding its reach for discounted groceries and consumer goods. While the company has grown significantly since its founding, many members may not know the meaning behind its name.
The initials "BJ" in BJ's Wholesale Club stand for Beverly Jean, the daughter of Mervyn Weich, the company's founder and first president. Weich's resignation was announced in June 1987, but the name remained.
BJ's traces its origins back to 1984 and began as part of the Zayre discount-store operation. Based in Massachusetts, the company later adopted a membership-only model, similar to competitors Costco and Sam's Club. Today, BJ's operates over 210 locations across 21 states.
The company emphasizes value and has been offering savings and convenience for over 40 years. BJ's recently announced expansion plans, including a new location in Tyler, Texas. "Value is the foundation of our company. BJ’s has been delivering unbeatable savings and convenience to families for more than 40 years," a BJ's Wholesale Club statement read. "We’re thrilled by the enthusiasm we’ve seen from members in Texas and look forward to taking care of families in Tyler and the surrounding communities."
Membership at BJ's costs $60 annually for a standard Club membership. A premium Club+ membership is available for $120 per year, offering additional benefits such as 2% back in rewards (up to $500 annually) and 5 cents off per gallon at BJ's gas stations, along with free curbside pickup. The company also offers its own Mastercard credit cards with rewards programs.
While BJ's is smaller than Costco and Sam's Club, it has been investing in its digital capabilities, including curbside pickup and same-day delivery. The retailer also offers private label brands like Wellsley Farms for food and beverages and Berkley Jensen for household products.
Unlike some competitors, many BJ's locations do not feature food courts, instead offering snack bars or kiosks such as Dunkin' Donuts. This contrasts with Costco, whose food court is known for its affordable items and requires membership verification for access to its deals. Costco memberships start at $65 per year, with premium options at $130.
